This term we have been very fortunate work with Mr Kevin Cale and the Local History Group to find out about the study of archaeology and how it can tell us about the lives of people in the past.
Our study was based around the ancient skeletons that were found in Masham.
First Mr Cale told us about the different professionals that would have been involved in studying the bones. We had a chance to dress up.
Next we went to Bradford University to meet the scientists whose job it is to examine the skeletons and find out who they were. There we were put into groups with some bones and artefacts. We had to reassemble them and try to work which period of history they had come from and how they had died.
Our last visit was to the Records Office in Northallerton. We were amazed at the size of the place, it was like the Tardis and had over 20 miles of shelving. In the afternoon we got to look at another skeleton, some artefacts from the Saxon period and make seals out of clay.
