Sports Funding Impact statement 2016/17

School Sports funding is ringā€fenced for PE and sport development in Schools. In our School, this funding is used to promote sustainable physical education, healthy lifestyles and sporting competition.

PE and school sport plays an important role at Kell Bank School with every child having the opportunity to participate in a range of sporting activities, competitions and outdoor active experiences. We believe P.E. contributes to the holistic development of our children, underpinning our school values of respect, co-operation and caring.

Below is an evaluation of how the school spent its allocation of funding during the 2016/17 academic year.

 

Competition and Performance

Over the year, equipment has been upgraded on sport-by-sport basis. The purchase of a wider range of sporting equipment has allowed for greater inclusion and potential for challenge for all pupils. In the ‘Growing up in North Yorkshire’ survey 2016 100% of pupils stated that they enjoy physical activity.

Teams from Kell Bank School have participated in a large variety of cluster sporting events during 2016/17: Netball, Football, Tag Rugby, Swimming, Rounders, Cricket, Hockey, Cross Country and Athletics. Despite the small size of the school, the pupils enjoy active competition and have gained success: representing the Bedale Cluster as winners in the Level 3 Hockey tournament in March 2017. We also participated in the girls’ football event January 2017 for the first time.

All pupils at Key Stage 2 have represented the school as part of a competitive team. All pupils in KS1 have taken part in multi sports competitions.

A lasting impact of the sport funding is that many of our pupils go on to further develop their sporting interests after leaving primary school. Several pupils have gone on to become members of local sports clubs including Bedale Squash Club, Masham Golf Club, Bedale Football Club, Wensleydale Rugby Club and Bedale and Richmond Swimming Clubs. We always enjoy hearing about our pupils’ sporting success. For example, one pupil leaving in 2016 has gone on to win competitions as part of the junior section of the local golf club, others have become part of swimming squads and football squads competing at county level and one pupil leaving in 2015 is now representing Youth Yorkshire at Cricket.

 

Participation

Sports funding is used to support a weekly sports club for all pupils. The after school multi-sports club is popular with up to 60% of pupils participating each week. In the ‘Growing up in North Yorkshire’ survey 2016, 75% of pupils stated that they do at least 5 hours of physical activity in a typical week, this represents an increase of 11% based on the 2014 data.

Sports funding has enabled outdoor learning to become increasingly embedded within the curriculum. All pupils have the opportunity to use a local woodland for outdoor learning and we have also developed our school garden over the year. The impact of this can be seen in the positive engagement of all learners, increased self-esteem, socialisation and team building skills.

Part of the funding this year was spent on training for the older pupils to support them in the role of ‘play leaders’ during break and lunch times. Impact of this has been that more pupils are encouraged to become physically active during break times. In the ‘Growing up in North Yorkshire’ survey 2016, 100% of pupils said that they at least play running/skipping/tag games during school break times. An increase of 37% from 2014.

The school provides transport to all sporting activities so that all children have the opportunity to attend and take part. There is no cost to parents/carers which promotes inclusiveness.

 

Promoting Health and Wellbeing

All pupils took part in Skip to Be Fit day in October 2016 to reinforce healthy lifestyles.

Majority of pupils have nutritionally balanced lunch provided by School catering. The school has an established gardening club where the pupils are encouraged to grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables. The produce is often used in school as a healthy snack and pupils take home much of the produce they have grown.

Funding is also used to facilitate our regular program of outdoor learning, including Forest Schools and outdoor visits. The funding allows us to support all activities with the necessary staffing ratios and provides training where necessary. The impact is that pupils develop a love of the outdoors and develop healthy lifestyles.

A new trim trail was established in 2016 with an all–weather surface which has extended the area of play for the pupils and further enhanced opportunities for skills development at play times.
